New fix for old 3DO controllers.
I was trying to figure out why the new controllers worked so much
better than the old ones, so I took them both apart to compare. Both of
the two controllers look the same ( no split rubber in the new one ). Now
for the fix that will make the old controller work as good - if not better
than the new controllers in the red box. I prefer this fix over cutting or
splitting the rubber.
Tools needed: very small phillips screw driver, emory board or medium sand
paper.
1. Take the controller, turn upside down, and remove the 6 phillips head
screws.
2. After removing the screws carefully lift only the back cover off the
controller while leaving the PC board in place. If the PC board tries to
come out with the back cover gently separate the board from the back.
3. Remove the cord from the plastic holder, lift the PC board out of the
controller and place in a safe out of the way spot.
4. Remove the gray rubber above the direction pad ( D-PAD ).
5. Take the hard plastic D-PAD out of the controller.
6. The modification are done to the hard plastic D-PAD. Looking at the
bottom of the D-PAD notice the tit in the very center. Take the emory
board and file the rounded tit until you have a flat surface about a 1/16"
to
1/8" in width.

If using sand paper, lay the sand paper down on a flat surface and take
the D-PAD in your hand with the tit facing downward. With light pressure
move the D-PAD back and forth, check the rounded tit for 1/8" flat surface
often while sanding.
7. After approximately 1/8" has been obtained, file the flat edges back to
round for smooth operation of D-PAD.
8. Place D-PAD back in controller with the side prongs fitting in the
slots.
9. Place the D-PAD rubber over the D-PAD while aligning the edges to fit
snuggly around the case of the D-PAD.
10. Make sure all rubber is in place covering all the buttons.
( A,B,C,X,and Y )
11. Place the PC board in the controller aligning the shift buttons to
strike the two smaller boards. The shift buttons should be in their
original place with mild tension on them.
12. Take the back cover and tilt into place so that the supports for the
shift buttons are behind the two small PC boards.
13. Gently snap the back cover into place so there is a tight fit.
14. Insert and tighten screws. Do NOT over tighten screws.
Now go give WOTW, ShockWave, and Madden a good work out !!
